Just because a book is aimed at children doesn’t mean that it can’t delve into science fiction concepts. Authors have always been willing to play with interesting ideas, like time travel. If this sounds like something that your children will be interested in, here are some of the books that you might want to check out.  

A Wrinkle in Time

Let’s start with one of the most beloved literary takes on time travel. Ever since it was first published in 1963, it has captured the imaginations of children around the world. It’s been frequently adapted for the stage, especially for school plays. It’s also been turned into a movie.

This is part of a series, which is aimed at middle-school readers. It has a darker side, which might lead to some scares. But it also has plenty of heart and comedy, which is sure to make it a delight for readers.  

The story centers on Emily, who finds her parents missing. She travels back to Victorian London to find them, looking through a city that is frozen in time. On her journey, she is accompanied by a hedgehog. To save her parents she needs to uncover a family secret, and stay out of the way of the vicious creatures that patrol the streets.  

The Johnny Maxwell Trilogy

If you are looking for a series that combines history and morals with a lot of fun, you might want to consider the Johnny Maxwell books. These are written by Terry Pratchet, known for his hilarious Discworld novels.  

This trilogy takes protagonist Johnny Maxwell to a series of strange events. For example, he is transported to an alien world from a video game. There the aliens request him to negotiate a peace treaty on their behalf. As usual with Terry Pratchet books, there will be plenty of funny twists and turns along the way.
